What is an automatic movement?

An automatic (or self-winding) watch is purely mechanical. A mainspring stores energy, a balance wheel oscillates several times per second, and a rotor winds the spring using the natural motion of your wrist. There is no battery. Left on the wrist daily, a good automatic keeps running indefinitely; set it down for a weekend and it will gently wind down, ready to be restarted with a few turns of the crown.

The reward is soul: a sweeping seconds hand that glides rather than ticks, an exhibition caseback that reveals the calibre at work, and the quiet satisfaction of owning a small mechanical engine. The trade-off is precision — a fine automatic typically runs within a few seconds per day, not per month.

What is meca-quartz?

Meca-quartz is a hybrid. A quartz module governs timekeeping with battery-driven accuracy, while a traditional mechanical module drives the chronograph (stopwatch) function. The result is the best of both worlds for a sports chronograph: quartz accuracy for the time, and a crisp, snappy mechanical reset of the chronograph hands — that satisfying flyback click you feel through the pusher.

Meca-quartz chronographs are also lighter on maintenance, more affordable to produce, and exceptionally reliable. For many people buying their first serious chronograph, it is the smart entry point.

How to choose
