How to Care for Your Automatic Watch: A Simple Owner's Guide

A well-made automatic watch is a mechanical engine you wear on your wrist — and like any engine, it rewards a little care. None of it is complicated. Follow these five habits and your AURENCOURT will keep perfect company for decades.

1. Keep it wound

An automatic winds itself from the motion of your wrist. Worn daily, it stays fully wound. If you set it aside for a few days it will stop — this is normal and harmless. To restart, turn the crown gently 20–30 times before setting the time. A watch winder is a worthwhile accessory if you rotate between several pieces.

2. Set it the right way

Always turn the hands clockwise when setting the time. For watches with a date, avoid changing the date between roughly 9pm and 3am — during these hours the movement is engaging the date mechanism, and forcing it can cause damage. Set the time forward past midnight to roll the date if needed.

3. Respect the water rating

Water resistance is not permanent. Gaskets age, so have them checked every 18–24 months if you swim with your watch. Never operate the crown or pushers underwater, and always ensure a screw-down crown is fully tightened before contact with water. Rinse with fresh water after exposure to salt or chlorine.

4. Store it safely

Keep your watch away from strong magnets — phone speakers, laptops, tablet covers and handbag clasps are common culprits that can affect timekeeping. Store it in its presentation box, away from extreme heat or cold. Wipe the case and bracelet with a soft microfibre cloth to keep it bright.

5. Service it occasionally

A mechanical movement runs on tiny amounts of lubricant that slowly dry out. A full service every 4–6 years keeps accuracy and longevity at their best — think of it as an oil change for something you will hand down one day.
